Take some time in the morning to explore your local village of San Nicola Arcella and its historic centre, then travel to an ‘agriturismo’ farm restaurant near Scalea for lunch. With fresh produce and a small farm on site, you will enjoy typical Calabrese produce and plenty of vegetables from their garden.
After a long lunch, travel to the hilltop town of Verbicaro. You will be welcomed by local guides in traditional dress, who will guide you through this crumbling village and its stories. The ‘social wine cellars’ typical of this town were built beneath each family’s home, where they produced and drank their own wines. Just a couple are still operating today, producing some very strong traditional red wines!
